I'm setting up a 46 gallon tank and I'm looking for suggestions on cool critters that are fun to watch.  The tank is "for my 5 year old" (well, it really wouldn't have happened without him, but yes, he would have been happy with a goldfish bowl).  I'm looking for hardy and too expensive if possible.  So just tell me what you like.

Stay away from these, no matter what Mr. A Lincoln tells you.  My all time favorite fun, easy going fish:

They don't look like much, but are a blast to watch.  Feather dusters are fairly hardy and fun to watch, kids usually gravitate towards them.

My Bicolor Blenny named Bull was the longest living fish I had for my first tank.  I think he made it...3 of the 4 years I had the tank.  He was a blast.  We had a barnacle decoration he called home and would defend.  Anyone that came to the glass would be cautiously approached, warned by a color change, and if that wouldn't work, he would strike his entire 2 1/2" body of pure muscle and teeth (okay, maybe just his gigantic eyelashes, he thought he was full of muscle and teeth though) straight at and then away.  He was very cool fish.

Yes, very cool fish, I have similar experiences with them.  Enough Bull...check these out too.

They are rumored to be reef safe, just don't mix with sea lions.

cleaner shrimp are fun to watch.  Scooter blennies are fun and cheap.  Sasquatch and Chupacabra are not reef safe, even if people with 6 Teraposts say they are.

Ahh, but their distant cousin, the Yeti is reef safe.

So I went to the LFS today and picked up a Yeti.  IT LEFT HAIR ALL OVER THE TANK!  What a mess!  If I had a cat, it would have developed a hair ball just from looking at the tank.  Do you have to shave it before introducing it to the aquarium?  Or did I get his cousin, Anne Ghetti on accident or something?

Sounds more like J.Paul Getty to me.  The yeti has a symbiotic relationship with the eels in your tank, they perform dentistry on the eels, whilst the eels groom the yeti.  Aquariums are just fascinating!!

Interesting indeed.

Clearly you didnt think it appropriate to notify the police of the confrontation.  Your thoughts on that?
